Meg Pier

about_1_787200101

There was a time when I felt I had “been there and done that,” world-weary and with the weight of the world on my shoulders.  Then, a series of serendipitous events – which certainly didn’t seem so at the time!  – provoked a degree of humility in me that allowed me to see the world a little differently.

Now, I am at my happiest when I can view my day and everything that parades through it as though through the eyes of a curious child. (Be assured, I have my days when I am more like a two-year old having a tantrum!)

My creative endeavors and this web site are an outgrowth of those experiences and new attitude.  And photography is one of those endeavors, and a passion for me.  It allows me to change my perspective, see the beauty in the everyday, “focus” on the moment at hand.

It provides a sense of purpose to my other great love:  travel to distant lands and cultures.

The photographs featured on this site were taken in locales over the world, and include images from:

  • Belize
  • British Columbia and Nova Scotia in Canada
  • The Caribbean
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • England
  • France
  • Greece
  • Guatemala
  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Malta
  • Mexico
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • and 28 states, stretching across each corner and coast of the U.S.

Wherever I am, I can sometimes wake up in a bad mood, so I rely on several books offering the ”meditation of the day” to encourage an open and optimistic frame of mind.  The message presented each morning often is exactly the one I am in need of, many times with unerring accuracy.  Wanting more of this, I began delving into books of quotations and collecting my favorites, based on what they elicited in me, the food they provided for my soul.

Just as a particular sight can take my breath away, so, too, a perceptive turn-of-the-phrase can make me gasp with recognition.  I marvel at how consistent human nature is over time, how the ancient philosophers’ and playwrights’ insights still speak truth about how we think, feel, and behave today.

Yet, over the eons, the very human desire to express, and to be heard, has led successive new generations to put their own twist on observations about the nature of man.   And, so, the “aha” moments of wit and wisdom continue.

In reading the reflections of the sages of the ages, I realized I have had the same reasonings, reactions and revelations. I have come to see I have shared the same awakenings as medieval pilgrims and beat poets, and that I too have a voice, and am a part of the chorus.  As we all do, and are.  Perhaps you, too, have had this experience.

The very quality that makes an image or insight timeless is the chord it strikes in all of us.  And, so in choosing to ”sing my part” by writing about my experiences, I have to really reflect on what the reverberations are, to resonate them outward with a clarity that rings true.

I’m never quite certain where the path is leading, but it’s always interesting and I invite you along.

Each day, you will find a fresh image and inspirational statement. Over time, new and different takes on “the view from the pier” will be added to the site.  If you have found an especially meaningful or interesting quotation, please do share it with me.  I also welcome your comments and thoughts.  Please email me at meg@viewfromthepier.com.

I look forward to sharing our travels and discoveries.  Please visit often.

  • [...] Then think about a trip to beautyful Malta–as travel writer Meg Pier describes it in her latest article in the Boston Globe.  I got itchy feet while reading it [...]

  • I came across your article about the Island of Gozo from a Friend in Ontario Canada, news travel fast, especially today with the means of the Eletronical mail. Most enjoyable article that was, enjoyed it so much, and I thank you. Come again

  • when I am feeling my worst, the absolute best thing I can do is to grab my camera and set out on the day. When Im on my side of the camera I forget about me and concentrate on whats in my viewfinder and on the other side of the camera. It makes me view the world (atleast mine) in a whole different light. You do look at things completely different.
