What is Cob? Cob is a mixture of clay, sand and straw. The clay acts as a glue, holding the sand together, while the straw gives it tensile strength. With a good roof and foundations to protect the walls, these buildings will last for centuries and any moisture that does reach them will naturally dry out. Many of the traditional thatched cottages you see in tourist brochures are made of this material and have been comfortably lived in for generations.
